Shalom
Everyone,
It’s August and
the heat of summer is upon us. Every day the temperature is at least in the
90’s and many times in the 100’s. I know a couple of days my SUV registered
over 120 degrees. Hope everyone is staying inside as much as possible and
drinking a lot of liquids. As with every year we will somehow get through it
although we have a right to talk about the weather and even complain a little
(as if it does any good). I am guessing that by now you realize that the High Holy days are only one month away.
Selichot, the beginning service of the holidays will be on Saturday night, September 1st. It is not a long service but the choir will be singing so it will get us all into the High Holy day mode. As we did last year we will be having a dinner that night so please make your reservations early and join us for a wonderful evening. The remainder of the High Holy day services will continue with Erev Rosh Hashanah on the night of September 9th. Make sure to get your tickets. If you know of individuals or families that do not have a synagogue to attend please have them call our office (leaving a message if no one answers) and purchase seats for Valley Beth Israel.
Let me update you a bit on the financial status of the synagogue. Your response to the 2018-19 billings has been excellent. We are current on most of our bills at this time (or have worked out payment arrangements for the one large bill we have with DWP). If you have any difficulties with paying your dues/fees please contact me so that I can put you in touch with the finance committee who are there to assist you. We do not want anyone to leave our synagogue but we ask that you search deep into your heart and pay everything you can. We’re willing to bend somewhat if you absolutely cannot afford what you have been billed. All discussions are in complete confidence.
As I mentioned in the newsletter last month we have a number of fundraisers being planned for the latter part of the year. I will be coming to you during and after the High Holy days to enlist your help in making sure these events are successful. Besides attending there is much preliminary work that does on and you, yes you, can be a part of the activity.
I inadvertently
made a mistake, probably the only one I have made in who knows when, when I
announced the BBQ and “game” afternoon would be in July. Well that was a bit
too ambitious, so it has been rescheduled for Sunday, August 12th
from 1 to 4 pm. We’d love to see you there; it should be a lot of fun. We plan
to BBQ outside (hot dogs and hamburgers with potato salad, cole slaw and all
the fixin’s) but the “bingo” and “horse racing” will be done in the social
hall. We’ll try to do both games during the time we allot but no matter what you
should have a great time. Please make plans to join us.
Ron
