President's Message March 2019

Shalom Everyone,

As usual lots to tell you about in this newsletter. We had a bit of a glitch in trying to get the casino bus trip off the ground (so to speak). We didn’t plan enough time to have everyone sign up to go with us and also we didn’t expect the Academy Awards to cause some not to want to be away during the telecast. So-o-o-o, we have decided to reschedule to a later date that we haven’t yet decided upon.

Several important dates are coming up in short order in the next few months. The first of which is Purim. The holiday actually begins on the night of Wednesday, March 20th. Rabbi will be having a service that night at the synagogue at which we will read the Megillah in English. This should be great for all of you who don’t know Hebrew and would like to know the full story of Purim. The next morning the Megillah will be read in Hebrew at the morning minyan. We’re hoping you will attend either or maybe both. Prior to what I have just reported we will have a pre-Purim luncheon on Sunday, March 17th (there is a fee and reservations are a must) that will be followed by a short (15-30 minute) Purim spiel (no charge to come for the spiel only). If you were at “The Chanukkah Story” in November/December and you liked it, this little teaser will knock your socks off. Written by our resident playwright, Roger Cowan, this spiel is even funnier. This is a shortened version of what you will see at Purim next year. SEE THE FLYER

Purim in March must mean Passover will be in April. The holiday begins on Friday night, April 19th, and there will be no synagogue service that night. Hopefully everyone will be joining with someone at a seder. VBI will host its own seder on Sunday evening, April 21st. SEE THE FLYER. Seating is limited to 46 and prepaid reservations are a must to secure your seat. It has been a sell out the last two years so don’t wait until the last minute to decide to join us. Check the date on the flyer but get your reservations in early.

A very important and exciting fundraiser will be held at the synagogue on Sunday, May 19th. We’re hosting a Mah Jongg tournament. If you’re a player or know a player please SEE THE FLYER and get registered. If you’re not a player you are still needed because we must have sixteen people to assist in the events of the day: serving food, ushering people around, assisting in drawings, etc. – it takes a lot of people. Please call the office if you are interested. If you have a sturdy card table(s) that we could borrow for the tournament we would appreciate the use of them.

Our Religious School is losing children/students to Bat/Bar Mitzvah graduation and we need your help in building it up again. A synagogue member is offering up to five (5) fully paid scholarships for the next school year. Call Mona at (818) 983-8176 for details. Help VBI continue to grow.

Lot’s more to tell you but not until next month. Stay well. Happy Holidays.                        Ron
