Hanukkah is over and I hope you were able to enjoy all the “joys” of the season with family and friends. The fact that Christmas eve fell on the first night of our Hanukkah holiday was unique. Before Hanukkah was over we were able to shop all of the after-Christmas sales to give a few gifts during our eight days of holiday (that’s if you dared to set foot into a mall at this time of year!).
So that this next
statement does not get lost in the body of this newsletter message I am going
to insert it in bold type, all caps:
AS
OF JANUARY 1st, 2017, IF YOU USE YOUR CREDIT CARD TO CHARGE ANYTHING
AT THE SYNAGOGUE, WE WILL ADD A 4% SERVICE FEE. Ever since we started
taking credit cards we, the synagogue, has been absorbing the fee charged to us
by the bank for every credit card transaction; and you, the user of the card
who has received perks from your bank, have been charged nothing by VBI. Think
about what I have said: many places that you shop and use your credit card extract
a service fee for that privilege.
During December the Religious School had its annual Hanukkah program and although I got sick with a terrible cold the night before and couldn’t attend I understand it was an overwhelming success. Some of the students played instruments while others did readings. Everyone had a wonderful time and learned a lot in the process. Thank you to all who were involved in this tremendous effort.
Following the school program the Men’s Club led by the cooking skills of Ed and Miriam Kasman provided a “latke feast” that filled everyone’s tummy. According to Richard Nadel who did a yeoman’s job frying all the latkes 20 pounds of potatoes disappeared before you could say delicious. Again thanks to all who helped. As I’m writing this I can hear the latkes being fried in the hot oil and the smell wafting through the synagogue. Boy am I sorry that I was sick and unable to be there.
For those of you who come to the
temple on a Friday night or Saturday morning (or actually anytime) and bring
money to turn into the office I ask that you not give it to me as there have
been many times when I put it in my pocket and forget about it for a week or
longer. Now there is a small black metal box on the outside wall of the office
to the left of the door and you can take a pink envelope and deposit it through
the slot on top. That way the office can receive it faster.
